Carbon Recycling's methanol plant in Svartsengi officially opened yesterday with a formal ceremony in Eldborg. Among the attending guests were the Minister of the Environment, local councilors, members of the parliament, investors and foreign visitors.
Production at the plant began last November and continued improvements have taken place since. Beginning this spring, the plant is expected to operate at full capacity producing two million liters of methanol anually, based on current hydrogen production.
Hydrogen reacts with CO2 from geothermal steam. This part of the plant can produce 5 million liters annually. Methanol produced at the plant will initially largely be exported and mixed with gasoline.
